How it works

Per-order profit on Shopify, using Shopify Payments on the Basic plan:

Revenue = product price + shipping charged
Card fee = 2.9% × revenue + $0.30
Profit = revenue − card fee − product cost − shipping cost − ad cost − other costs
Break-even ad cost = profit + current ad cost (the most you can pay to acquire an order and still break even)

Rates by plan (verified against Shopify's official pricing): Basic 2.9% + 30¢, Grow 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced 2.5% + 30¢ — pick your plan above. Plan prices for reference: Basic $29/mo billed yearly or $39/mo billed monthly; Grow $79/mo billed yearly; Advanced $299/mo billed yearly. (Monthly prices for Grow and Advanced are not shown because they could not be verified on an official Shopify page.) If you do not use Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee (Basic 2%, Grow 1%, Advanced 0.6%) on top of your gateway's own fees — that scenario is flagged in the limitations, not baked into the headline number.

Frequently asked questions

What are Shopify Payments fees on the Basic plan?

With Shopify Payments in the US: Basic 2.9% + 30¢, Grow 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced 2.5% + 30¢ per online transaction. Plan prices: Basic $29/mo billed yearly or $39/mo monthly; Grow $79/mo billed yearly; Advanced $299/mo billed yearly. Figures verified Oct 2026 against shopify.com/pricing.

What is the break-even ad cost?

The maximum you can spend acquiring one order before the order stops being profitable. If your actual cost per order is below it, the order makes money; above it, you are buying revenue at a loss.

Is the Shopify subscription included?

No — the plan fee (Basic $29/mo billed yearly or $39/mo monthly; Grow $79/mo billed yearly; Advanced $299/mo billed yearly) is a fixed monthly cost, not a per-order cost, so V1 leaves it out of per-order profit. Divide it by your monthly orders and add it to 'Other per-order costs' if you want it included.

What if I use PayPal or another gateway instead of Shopify Payments?

Shopify then charges a third-party transaction fee (2% on Basic) in addition to the gateway's fees. Model it by adding 2% of revenue to 'Other per-order costs', or use our PayPal fee calculator for the gateway side.

How we calculate & limitations

Worked example: $59.00 product + $5.00 shipping = $64.00 revenue → card fee $2.16. Costs $20.00 + $7.50 + $8.00 ads + $1.00 other → profit $25.34, a 39.6% margin, and you could spend up to $33.34 per order on ads before losing money.

Assumptions & limitations: Shopify Payments online card rates by plan (Basic 2.9% + 30¢, Grow 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced 2.5% + 30¢), US, verified against shopify.com/pricing. Plan subscription, app fees, the premium-card differential (Basic premium cards 3.5% + 30¢) and the third-party transaction fee (Basic 2% / Grow 1% / Advanced 0.6%, when not using Shopify Payments) are not included in the headline profit.
