How it works

Since January 6, 2025, Mercari uses a simple two-sided structure — the seller pays a 10% selling fee, the buyer pays a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee, and the old payment processing fee is gone:

Fee base = item price + shipping charged to buyer
Selling fee = 10% x fee base — Buyer Protection fee (paid by buyer) = 3.6% x fee base
Profit = fee base − selling fee − item cost − your shipping & packaging cost

The key detail is the base: because buyer-paid shipping is included, charging shipping does not avoid the fee — you pay 10% on the shipping amount too. If you offer free shipping instead, the base is just the item price, but then the shipping label cost comes entirely out of your own margin, so enter your actual label cost above either way.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Mercari charge sellers now?

Since January 6, 2025, Mercari charges sellers a flat 10% selling fee. The fee is calculated on the item price plus the shipping charged to the buyer, so buyer-paid shipping is part of the fee base. Older descriptions you may still see online — 0% seller fees, or a 2.9% + $0.50 processing fee — describe the previous fee structure and no longer apply.

Does Mercari still charge a payment processing fee?

No. Mercari removed its payment processing fee on January 6, 2025. There is no separate processing charge for buyers or sellers under the current structure — the seller pays only the 10% selling fee.

Who pays the 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on Mercari?

The buyer pays it. The 3.6% Buyer Protection fee is charged to the buyer at checkout on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. It is shown in this calculator for transparency only and is never deducted from the seller's payout.

Does Mercari charge to withdraw my balance?

ACH direct deposit is free for successful withdrawals. Instant Pay costs a flat $3 per transfer, charged per transfer — not per sale — so it is not deducted in this calculator.

How we calculate & limitations

Worked example: A $40.00 item with $7.50 shipping charged to the buyer: fee base $47.50 → selling fee $4.75 at 10%. With $15.00 item cost, $7.50 shipping label cost and $0.50 packaging, profit is $19.75. The buyer separately pays a Buyer Protection fee of $1.71, which does not reduce the seller's payout.

Assumptions & limitations: The selling fee is calculated on item price plus shipping charged to the buyer. The Buyer Protection fee is shown for transparency only and is never deducted from the seller's payout. Payout transfer fees are not included because they are charged per transfer, not per sale. Seller-cancellation charges and the optional Mercari Authenticate service are not included.
